10. Conclusion

A reduction in feed intake has occurred in some studies of broilers (Classen et al. 1991 {440}; Nassar and Arscott 1986{537}), and laying hens (Summers et al. 1988 {506}) consuming CM-based diets. The conclusion most readily drawn is that the presence of CM in diets reduces intake by poultry. However, this effect was not observed in two recent Canadian studies (Guenter, 1990, unpublished data; Fasina and Campbell 1997{305}). It is difficult to determine from data currently available whether an observed reduction in performance decreases feed intake, or vice-versa. Studies based on diets formulated to available amino acid content may allow the nutritive value of CM to be accurately compared with other protein sources and permit assessment of what effect, if any, CM has on intake.
